Obituary

Jan Graycarek, a beloved longtime resident of Mishicot, passed away peacefully early Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at ABridge Care Cottage in Kewaunee.

Born on July 27, 1941, in Appleton, Wisconsin, Jan was the daughter of Andrew and Rita (Moser) Bergman. Jan graduated from Mishicot High School in 1959 and completed her studies at the National School of Aeronautics the same year. After graduation, she embarked on a career in New York, working as a teletype operator for Northwest Orient Airlines.

After returning home, Jan married Gerald “Jerry” Graycarek at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Mishicot on November 3, 1962. They raised three children, Wendy, Rick, and Traci, and always enjoyed spending time with family, friends, and neighbors. They were married 50 years until Jerry passed away on August 29, 2013.

A devoted member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Mishicot, Jan also taught CCD, served on Holy Cross’ school board of education, and was an active member of the Altar Society. She also served on the Board of Appeals for the Village of Mishicot.

Jan found joy in the simple pleasures that made a house a home. She loved cooking, baking, and filling the kitchen with the comforting aromas of homemade treats, including cookies, breads, bars, and desserts. She took great pride in maintaining a clean home, sometimes even licking her finger to pick up a piece of fuzz, a habit that her grandchildren amusingly copied. She found immense joy in tending to her garden, nurturing her flowers, fluffing the ground, and taking pride in creating a beautiful environment. However, above all, her greatest love was her family. She cherished every gathering, every conversation, and every opportunity to show her love for the people she held dear.

She is survived by her children: Wendy (Doug) Novak of Green Bay, Rick (Karen) Graycarek of Elizabethtown, KY, and Traci (Curt) Weis of Appleton. Her grandchildren include Danielle (Alex) Peterson, Briana (Travis) Roubal; Patrick (Ashley) Graycarek, Kara (Zac) Henderson, Kate Graycarek, Keagan, Peyton, Brynlie, and Cailynn Weis. She is also blessed with great-grandchildren: Brody, Noah, Eleanor and Sadie. She is further survived by her sister, Judie Lehman, and her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Carol (Jim) Cookle, Diane (Gary) Garrigan, Tom (Kathy) Graycarek, numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jerry, and a brother, Richard Bergman.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Mishicot. Family will welcome friends and relatives from 9:00 am until 10:45 am for visitation in the church. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 am. Father Leo Kondru will officiate. Interment in the Knollwood Chapel Mausoleum in Manitowoc will happen at a later date. There will be no visitation on Friday evening.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Jan’s family expresses their deepest gratitude to Debbie, Ashley, Haley, and the entire team of caregivers at ABridge Care Cottage in Kewaunee. They also want to thank Krystle, Danielle, and the entire Compassus hospice team for their care. Their compassion, patience, kindness, and dedication brought comfort and dignity to mom and provided reassurance to our family during a difficult time. We will always be extremely grateful for the gentle care they gave her, the respect they showed her, and the many ways they helped make her final years more comfortable. Their care was a true gift to mom and to all of us who loved her.
